MDaemon 15 IMAP issues

Hello,

So I had posted this client a while back who has 15.5.4 and IMAP issues with one user. This one user does have a lot of Emails (60-70 Gigs worth and will be doing an Auto Archive in Outlook this weekend). I have deleted and remade their Outlook profile as well.

So issue is this one email account would always popup on outlook asking for Username and Password. Server would show SMTP Authentication failed. Then next time it would work just fine.

Running Outlook 2016 64 bit with Windows 10 Pro. I have looked up and tried multiple things about Outlook losing the password thinking that may be the issue. This only happens on this one PC for this one user (Only email user on this PC though). Attached is a quick SMTP IN log of how it shows Failed Authentication two times in a row then seconds later it is good.

Other times it won't ask for a password. Act as if everything is normal, and then just not update any emails until the Server side is restarted.

So few questions.
1) Could this old version of MDaemon be an issue

2) Would switching to something like Outlook Connector or ActiveSync be another fix

3) Or does this sound like it is just a PC issue?

They use Mail Droid email app on Android Phone, and Outlook on their Laptop with no issues (Android does have an issue with displaying some folders but I think that is an app issue). Webmail seems to have no issues but they don't use it, I just use it to check and verify if an account is working when Outlook stops working on their end.

Just so you are aware, MDaemon 15.5 is no longer supported.  My first recommendation is to upgrade to the latest version simply because there are a TON of fixes and changes from 15.5 to MDaemon 20.0, soon to be 21.0.  To be honest, I don't think it will fix your issue as I've never seen an issue with MDaemon randomly not accepting a password.  My suspicion is that Outlook is sending the wrong data.
 
The easiest way to confirm that would be to setup a tool such as wireshark on the MDaemon server, and use it to capture the SMTP traffic.  Since TLS doesn't appear to be getting used, the network capture will allow you to get the username and password pretty easily.  
 
Have you recreated the Outlook profile or recreated the account in Outlook?  Maybe before you start deleting accounts in Outlook, creating a new profile with a new account setup would help you determine if that actually fixes it.

    Hi Arron,

    Yea I plan on getting them upgrade possibly. Most of my clients don't like to pay for upgrades every year but try not to let them get too far out of date.

    I have made a new profile in Outlook. That was done yesterday only to have the same thing happen again today.

    I will use Wireshark and see if it can pick up any SMTP data. And yea they are not using any encryption as email is local only. Only 1 user has outside access on their phone (same user actually) but that is TLS.

    If you'd like help getting the data from the wireshark capture, let me know. There is usually a ton of data, but once you have the capture you should be able to filter it by protocol and show only the SMTP traffic.

    So it looks like it is an issue on the PC Side. Outlook keeps losing the password. Have already created a new profile and same issue. Only affects this one user on this one PC. Also did a reinstall of office when i made the new profile as well.

    Account is added though IMAP.

    Wondering if ActiveSync or OC would be a better solution? Not sure if you guys still give out trial keys for those older versions to test as the Trial Key buttons don't work anymore in the system. They aren't against upgrading if it fixes the issue but I don't see the MDaemon software it self being the issue here at this point so wanted to see if one of those two would fix the issue or not.

    Are there any updates available for Outlook?

    Outlook is updated fully.

    They went ahead and updated. When i told him about Active sync and being about to sync contacts with Outlook and the Phone my client jumped on that

    I will let you know how it turns out. I did do an archive of email older than 2019 to a .PST file and it seemed to have helped a bit.

    So ended up upgrading them to the latest version of MDaemon and also added Active Sync since the features of it were things they wanted.

    I did notice that before I did all of this i archived about 20 gigs of emails (he has about 60 now) and on the old version it seemed to run better.

    I have other issues where it seems like once emails get to large or too many MDaemon starts to act up like LCK files getting stuck or Outlook asking for passwords all the time. About half of my clients use it as POP so no issues there and the other IMAP/OC/AS and they are the ones that tend to have issues.

    Which version of MDaemon did you update to?

    With MDaemon 21.0.0, it should no longer be possible for LCK files to get abandoned on disk. We changed MDaemon to use LCK files that the operating system deletes when MDaemon closes the LCK file.    
     
    If you are having issues with LCK files on disk and are running MDaemon 21.0.0, that should mean that MDaemon still has the LCK file open, which means its still reading/writing data.

    It does take time to update the IMAP.MRK file in each folder.  The more messages in a folder the longer it takes.  And while the IMAP.MRK file is being updated, the folder is locked. The specs of the MDaemon server also come into play.  The main component will be the drive speeds though, the faster MDaemon can read and write data, the faster it can update the MRK file, and the sooner the lock can be released.  
     
    Are all of your clients now on MDaemon 21?  
     
    Do all of your clients that have issues with LCK files being left on disk have a lot of messages in folders?
     
    Would it be possible for me to get a copy of a mailbox that you regularly have issues with LCK files being left on disk?
