Hello,

Since a long time we are using the backupsoftware from GoodSync to sync our data files. After a job is done, it sends out a e-mail with the details of the job.

Since the last couple of days our Admin receives the following error:

Your message contains invalid characters (bare line feed characters) which the email servers at *OUR DOMAINNAME* don't support.

We adjusted the receiving mail address (lets say backup@backup.com) to (for example) backup@gmail.com. The mail is received without any problems. So there is something going on, on our MDaemon Mailserver.

We are using MDaemon version 20.0.3 (x86).

How can we fix the issue under MDaemon so we will receive the mail again?

I know this is an older post and since the last update it worked, but now the error is back again. When Goodsync is sending us an e-mail, it bounces with the following message:

---------------------------
Your message contains invalid characters (bare line feed characters) which the email servers at *OUR DOMAINNAME* don't support.
---------------------------

This bounce is received by their mail administrator, which uses Office 365. Office 365 is also set as the SMTP server within GoodSync.

When I change the receiving mail adres (let say backup@ourdomain.com) to a Gmail address, the log file is received. This also happens when I send it to a Hotmail address, so the problem lies somewhere (I think) within MDaemon.

Goodsync already has the latest version so updating is not an option anymore. Within Goodsync, you can't adjust the mail in any way so removing base lines within there is no option.

How can I solve this problem?

Hello,

The first issue is that the software that is creating the email should not be sending a message with a bare line feed. I' suggest contacting GoodSync to see if they are able to fix the issue or provide some means of not sending an email with a bare line feed.  If they are willing, it should be a pretty simple change.

"A bare line feed is a line feed (LF) character that's not immediately preceded by a carriage return (CR) character. In other words, instead of a line of text ending with CR LF, it ends with only LF."

Before Microsoft tries to deliver a message with bare line feeds, it checks to see if the receiving server advertises support for SMTP Chunking or SMTP BDAT.  Although MDaemon will handle the bare line feed if it receives one in a message, we do not advertise support for SMTP Chunking or SMTP BDAT because we don't fully support either.  So when Microsoft's connects to the server and sees that it is not offering support Chunking or BDAT, it immediately bounces the message instead of trying to send it.

My second recommendation is to try to get Microsoft to deliver the email with bare line feeds, even though MDaemon is not advertising support for Chunking or BDAT. MDaemon will accept and process the message without any issues.

My third recommendation is to have GoodSync deliver the email directly to MDaemon, bypassing Microsoft.  Microsoft is the one making the decision to bounce the message, if you can bypass it and send it directly to MDaemon, or any other server that will simply pass the message on without doing the same checking that Microsoft is doing, the message should be received correctly.

We are planning to add support for SMTP Chunking in MDaemon 21.5, which we hoping to release in the fall.

Hello Arron,

Thank you for your reply. Strangely enough, after a week of not receiving e-mail, the mail is being received again. I didn't change a thing. Maybe it was just a hick up on the side of Microsoft or so, I really have no idea.

Anyway, for now it's fixed again. Thought you should know )
